Darkness

Have you ever been totally in the dark…I mean in a room or outside when there was no light shining or no glow from the moon and the stars? The darkness so dark you could literally not see your hand in front of your face? Have you ever felt the blackness of the dark night enveloping you until you felt totally helpless and alone and maybe even afraid?

The definition of darkness has several meanings. Commonly its definition simply means a partial or total absence of light. A second definition describes darkness as meaning: wickedness or evil-as in “the forces of darkness”. Synonyms for darkness include: sin, iniquity, immorality, devilry, or the Devil.

Scripture usually refers to darkness as wickedness, sin or evil. Examples include some of the following:

Jesus said to Saul in Acts 26: 17b-18 “I am sending you to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”

1 Samuel 2: 9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.”

Colossians 1: 13 “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.”

It is comforting for me as a Christian to know that no matter how dark the world becomes, no matter the evil that surrounds me, no matter the circumstances, Jesus is my light. He has overcome evil. He has overcome the world.

John 1: 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

We do not have to fear darkness because Jesus Christ, Son of God is light and has come to remove the darkness of sin in our life. We no longer have to fear sin or evil because Jesus died and redeemed us from all sin. He gives us guidance and purpose in a world deeply entrenched in sin and darkness.

John 12: 46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

Are you in a dark place? Are you fearful and alone? Have your sins made you feel unworthy, guilty and beyond help? Let the true light of the world “Jesus” be your light. He will provide the light of hope and redemption for only He can provide the strength to remove sin, fear and darkness from your life.
